ABOUT US

The Union Mission Chapel was built in 1885 by people much like our generation.  People who were trying to survive the best way they could, providing food and shelter for their families and helping neighbors in times of need.

In our every changing world we have the same problem as our ancestors; there is never enough time to do all that needs to be done.

The Chapel was built by people who came from diverse backgrounds and cultures.  Some were fundamentalists while others were liberal.  The Chapel leaders were forward thinking when they chose to be “interdenominational” rather than “nondenominational” this allowed ministers of local churches to take turns preaching the word of God and not involve the politics of denominations.

In 1885 when weather conditions did not allow them to worship God in sanctuaries of their own denominations the Union Mission Chapel allowed them to Worship The Lord In The Beauty of Holiness.

The song, “One In The Spirit” was written by Peter Scholtes a seminarian from Chicago in the 1960’s. This song was written to inspire people to do better things and to be better people rather than focusing to force others to change.

We are one in the Spirit, we are one in the Lord

We are one in the Spirit, we are one in the Lord

And we pray that all unity will this day be restored

And they'll know we are Christians by our love, by our love

Yes, they'll know we are Christians by our love

We will work with each other, we will work side by side

We will work with each other, we will work side by side

And we'll guard each man's dignity and save each man's pride

And they'll know we are Christians by our love, by our love

Yes, they'll know we are Christians by our love.

This song was first sung by the youth choir of St. Brendan’s in Chicago at a service during the civil rights movement for an ecumenical and interracial event inspired by John 13:35 your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples.
